WORD FOR THE WEEK: REFUGE

The first scripture reference for refuge—meaning a shelter of safety and protection—addresses the establishment of residence for the Levites throughout Canaan land. These territories not only provided housing for them but also a place other than the main temple of worship for God’s Word to be delivered to the people.

An interesting provision made by God besides the housing in the city and the suburbs, was places of refuge for the “manslayers.” These were individuals who may have killed someone unintentionally but needed to wait for a fair hearing. In order for them to be protected, they remained in these houses of refuge until such a time. God showed Himself as a refuge for the carriers of His Word—and for its violators.

Thank the Lord. He is our shelter in the time of storm, a
refuge and a very present help in time of trouble!
