This is a very common and familiar passage that many of us memorized in a childhood Sunday School. It represents a threefold desire and responds with a three-fold solution.
In the complexity of this life, it is easy to feel shut out, as if our prayers have gone unheard. Christ recognizes this and encourages the yearning soul to ask for that which is wished for, to seek that which is missed, and knock for those things we’ve been shut out from.
The eternal wisdom of Jesus realized that the human heart was skeptical of reaching out for what had eluded them in the past and present. This required the three-fold assurance: (1) If indeed we are willing to ask, He is willing to give. (2) If we are willing to seek, He promises we will find. (3) If we are willing to knock, the shut doors will be opened.
If we ask and don’t receive, the Lord says we have asked “amiss,” not believing in the first place.
Seek wisdom, faith, and assurance so the Father can give the Kingdom to His beloved, merely for asking, seeking, and knocking!
